The Story Behind My Oil Painting of a Curious Kitten

Curious, Oil Painting of a Kitten on Stretched Linen Canvas

Some paintings arrive fully formed. Others linger quietly in the background for months before finally demanding to be painted.

Curious belonged to the latter category.

For a long time, the image of a small kitten staring at the world with complete innocence kept returning to my mind. Not fear. Not caution. Just pure curiosity. The kind of open and unguarded wonder that only very young animals seem capable of.

That feeling became the foundation for this oil painting.

Rather than creating a dramatic or highly narrative scene, my goal was to capture a simple emotional state: innocence meeting the unknown for the very first time.

The Intention Behind Curious

What drew me to this subject was not simply the kitten itself, but what it represented.

There is something deeply optimistic about curiosity before experience teaches caution. The way young animals observe the world feels honest and instinctive. I wanted the painting to preserve that fleeting moment of openness.

Like many paintings, Curious went through moments where it could easily have been rushed.

One of the hardest parts while painting Curious was getting the kitten’s expression right without overdoing it. Very small changes in the eyes, lighting, or softness of certain edges could completely change the feeling of the painting.

I also wanted the fur to feel soft and fluffy without becoming too detailed or overly polished.

Addressing these challenges came down mostly to restraint and careful control of values and color. I wanted the transitions to remain soft and understated so the painting could preserve the quiet innocence and warmth that first inspired it.

What’s Next - Soft Wilderness Series

Curious is part of an ongoing series of oil paintings that I’m working on titled Soft Wilderness.

The series focuses on wildlife and animal subjects, approached through a quieter and more emotional lens rather than a purely documentary one. Across these paintings, I’ll be exploring different moods, themes, and atmospheres through the use of light, color, texture, and composition.

Some works may feel intimate and gentle, while others may lean toward solitude, tension, mystery, or stillness. What connects them is an interest in capturing fleeting emotional moments within the natural world rather than simply reproducing animals realistically.

Curious is currently available for purchase. Details can be accessed here.
